A meal at McDonalds could cost over £44 in another 50 years, new inflation research has shown.

As the fast food chain celebrates its 50th anniversary in the UK, marked with a host of new additions to its menu, prices are certainly a lot higher than they were when the first restaurant opened in Woolwich, south London, in October 1974.

When the store opened its doors Hamburgers were a mere 15p, while Cheeseburgers cost 21p.

Fast forward 50 years and a Quarter Pounder with cheese costs £4.99 on its own, or £8.59 as a large meal, which includes chips and a drink of your choice.

The cheapest items at the chain belong to the saver menu, where the cheapest food is £1.19.

New research from investment platform Stocklytics reveals how much some of the most popular McDonald’s items will cost in another 50 years, based on the average inflation rate over the past 50 years which sits at 5.2%.

By 2074, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese could set you back £25.94 or £44.66 as a large meal. Similarly a six-piece Chicken Selects meal will cost £44.66 or £25.42 on their own.

One of the most popular and long-standing items on the menu, McNuggets, could cost around £24.38 on its own or £36.86as a large meal.

A cheeseburger, which features on the saver menu and currently costs £1.39, could shoot up to £7.22 on its own. But if you’re looking to make it a meal, the classic fast food favourite could come in at £20.94.

While a McNugget Happy Meal currently costs £3.59, research shows that it might jump up to £18.66 in 2074.

Inflation rates remain high amid the cost of living crisis and were also high in the 1970s after oil prices rose following the Yom-Kippur War of 1973. Meanwhile, oil prices more than doubled following the 1979 Revolution in Iran.
