With the recent deployment of fully 42 battery electric school buses, InspireNOLA Charter Schools is providing smooth, quiet, and emissions-free transportation for thousands of students in and around New Orleans.
Operated by Louisiana-based A&S Transportation and Highland Electric Fleets, the new electric bus fleet replaces the same number of diesel buses while maintaining reliable service across 58 routes covering more than 3,400 miles per day.
Figuring approx. 181 tons of harmful carbon emissions per bus, per school year. That’s a significant ~5,790 tons of carbon saved – a number that translates to hundreds of thousands of dollars in community health benefits every year.
Replacing an average diesel school bus in the US fleet in 2017 with an electric one resulted in $84,200 in total benefits per individual bus. Each electric school bus emitted 181 fewer metric tons of carbon dioxide than its diesel counterpart, amounting to $40,400 worth of climate benefits. Meanwhile, each electric school bus was associated with $43,800 in health savings, from less air pollution and reduced rates of mortality and childhood asthma.
That’s a huge win for InspireNOLA students and parents, and one more great example of how EV adoption benefits every member of a community.

Electric IC Bus
The Electric IC Bus itself ships with a 210 kWh li-ion battery that sends power to 255 kW (~340 hp) electric motor. The ultra-efficient drivetrain is good for 135 miles of range, but can be optioned up to more than 200 miles with a larger, optional battery pack.
The buses are served by seven Kempower C800 power cabinets supporting 52 total DC fast charging ports for efficient overnight charging and operational flexibility.
