An intense firefight has been caught on video as Russian forces “attempt to surround” the Donbas town of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine.

The video shows Brazillian soldiers who have joined the Ukrainian Foreign Legion in an intense battle against Russian forces.

General Vitaliy Barabash, head of Avdiivka’s military administration has admitted it is now a lot “tougher” as Russian forces attempt to “storm” the key town of Avdiivka.

Barabash told Espreso TV, “Things in the Avdiivka sector have become even tougher.

“The intensity of clashes has been increasing for some time.

“The Russians have opened up two more sectors from which they have begun making assaults – in the direction of Donetsk and in the so-called industrial zone.

“The enemy is attempting to storm the city from all directions.”

Moscow has been sending their soldiers to the “meat grinder” and wave after wave of Russian troops are being “senselessly” killed.

The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) said in an intelligence update on X on Wednesday, “In recent days, Russian forces have made further small advances on the northern axis of a pincer movement as part of their attempt to surround the Donbas town of Avdiivka.

Since the start of October 2023, Russian forces have moved the frontline forwards up to 2km in this area.

“Although modest, this advance likely represents one of the greatest Russian gains since spring 2023. It has cost the units involved thousands of casualties.”

The MoD added, “Although Avdiivka has become a salient or bulge in the Ukrainian front line, Ukraine remains in control of a corridor of territory approximately 7km wide, through which it continues to supply the town.”

Russia is also keeping two submarines which can carry eight Kalibr missiles that will remain on combat duty in the Black Sea.

The Ukrainian Navy wrote on Telegram, “The missile threat level is high.”

The MoD also noted that Russia’s glide bombs kits have “achieved poor accuracy” and Moscow are now focused on using cluster munition bombs.

The MoD said, “Through November 2023, the Russian air force has likely started to more frequently employ the RBK-500 500kg cluster munition bomb.

“Depending on the variant, each RBK-500 ejects between approximately 100 and 350 sub-munitions. In Turn, each sub-munition typically detonated with either hundreds of high-velocity fragments, or a single, larger anti-tank charge.

“RBK-500 are reported to have been deployed against Ukrainian forces on the Vuhledar axis and near Avdiivka, both in Donetsk Oblast.

“There is a realistic possibility that, as with other air-dropped bombs, Russia has likely recently integrated a UMPC guided stand-off glide kit with RBK-500. This allows the carrying aircraft to release the munition many kilometres away from the target.”

The MoD intelligence update added, “Russia’s glide bomb kits have generally achieved poor accuracy.

“However, with its large number of sub-munitions, a single RBK-500 can cause effects over an area of several hundred metre, increasing the chance of inflicting at least some damage on the intended target.”
