Jeremy Hunt

The chancellor Jeremy Hunt has refused to say how many properties he owns after he announced a cut in the top rate of capital gains tax on property sales from 28% to 24%.

In an interview with economics and political journalist Robert Peston, Hunt was asked how many properties he owns as the pair clashed in a post-Budget interview broadcast on ITV.

As he appeared on ITV’s Peston programme, Hunt refused to answer questions on how many properties he owns. “These are personal questions,” he told Peston. When pushed, Hunt said: “We declare all these things.”

According to the register of interests, the Chancellor is a landlord with seven apartments in Southampton, a half-share in an office building in London and a half-share in a holiday home in Italy. It is not known what other properties he owns – if any.

It comes after he mocked Angela Rayner, who has faced questions about selling her former council house, while announcing a capital gains tax cut on Wednesday.
