Russian forces suffered a “dark day” and lost 1,950 men over the past 24 hours, according to new figures released.

The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said that over the preceding day Vladimir Putin lost 1,950 soldiers which surpasses 1,770 the day before and the total number killed since the war started now stands at 712,610 official figures reveal.

Ukraine’s Defence Ministry said that Russia is losing soldiers at a rate of one every 49 seconds which highlights the devastating impact of lost human life.

Russian ‘shock units’ to attack Ukrainian forces in a massive escalation after ‘dark day’ in Kursk

The high death rate of Russian soldiers is attributed to Putin’s forces stepping up their offensive to recapture Ukrainian occupied territory in Russia’s Kursk Oblast region before Donald Trump is inaugurated on 20 January, NATO allies believe.

Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that “tens of thousands of enemy soldiers from the best Russian shock units” have been deployed to eliminate Ukrainian soldiers from the Russian Federation.

Vladyslav Voloshyn, Ukrainian military’s Southern Command spokesperson told Reuters on Monday that “any day” Russian assaults could start in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Voloshyn said that Russia will also deploy well trained assault groups which is thought will advance to Zaporizhzia and they are preparing to attack.

He said, “(The assaults) could begin in the near future, we’re not even talking about weeks, we’re expecting it to happen any day.”

They are preparing both armored groups and light vehicles — buggies, motorcycles — to conduct these assault operations,” he added.

On Sunday the UK’s Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin told the BBC that “every single day” Russia is losing at least 1,500 soldiers which is a huge cost for Russia.

Sir Tony has said that Russia is “making tactical, territorial gains” in Ukraine, but equally they have suffered their worst month due to high numbers of casualties since the war started.

Putin is throwing tens of thousands of Russian lives into the “meat grinder” so he can claim territorial gains in Ukraine, thus far Russian wives and mothers have lost almost 700,000 troops for the so-called “special military operation.”

Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg Sir Tony said that ordinary Russian citizens are being forced to pay an “extraordinary price” for Putin’s war.
