The Kremlin has issued a warning that the war in Ukraine could “spread to Moldova” as they are making a “serious mistake.”

The Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned Moldova not to suffer the same destiny as Ukraine, which comes after the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) won the majority in the recent elections.

Moscow is accusing Chisinau of being antagonistic toward Russia and Vladimir Putin has voiced his concerns that President Maia Sandu won the election instead of a pro-Russian leader.

President Sandu backs PAS and they were able to secure more than 50% of the votes on 28 September.

Russian state media TASS reported Peskov saying, “This is a continuation of a rather confrontational line toward our country, an unfriendly line. The current leadership of Moldova, in our view, is making a serious mistake.”

The Kremlin’s spokesman added, “They believe that the policy of building relations with Europe involves complete antagonism toward Russia.

“One state has already made this mistake. It brought nothing good to that one state.”

Peskov was making a direct threat to Moldova that they could suffer the same fate as Ukraine with a full-scale war.

Chisinau has submitted an application to join the European Union and is not currently a member of NATO.

The European Union had warned Chisinau ahead of the elections that they are facing “an unprecedented campaign of disinformation” from Russia.

In September the Moldovan President warned that her “country is under threat” from Russia as Putin is trying to destabilise the former Soviet Union country.

President Sandu warned Moldova’s sovereignty and independence from Moscow is under threat which will be used to invade other regions of Ukraine.

President Sandu said, “Today I can say with full confidence that the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and European future of our country are under threat.

“The Kremlin is spending hundreds of millions of euros to buy hundreds of thousands of votes on both banks of the Dniester River and abroad.”

She said that Moldovans are being hit with “intoxication with dozens of false messages” daily and “hundreds of people are being paid to provoke chaos, violence and intimidate society”.

President Sandu added, “If Russia gains control over Moldova, the consequences will be immediate and will threaten our country and the entire region. All Moldovans will suffer, regardless of who they voted for.

“Europe will stop at Moldova’s border. Freedom of movement may end and our land could become a launchpad for penetration into Odesa Oblast.

“The Transnistrian region will be destabilised. These are their plans and they’re not hiding them.”
