Private landlords are among those that must comply with HMRC’s digital drive.

The Making Tax Digital (MTD) for self-assessment project, including landlords, was 0originally announced in 2015.

Despite some concerns, the government said in the Spring Statement that it is pushing ahead – and confirmed an extra 900,000 landlords and freelancers will have to comply.

MTD, which has been in operation for VAT Since April 2022, will apply to landlords as well as self-employed individuals.

The government has confirmed that the MTD will start from April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 and extend to those with incomes over £30,000 in April 2027.

In a technical document issued alongside the Spring Statement, the government has confirmed that the MTD rules will start from April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 and extend to those with incomes over £30,000 in April 2027.
