Redditch MP Rachel Maclean is the latest housing minister to arrive through the revolving door at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
The newcomer replaces previous housing minister Lucy Frazer, who was only in the role for four months, after stints in the Ministry of Justice last year as well as the Home Office and Transport Department.
The government has yet to officially confirm her exact responsibilities, however the roles of her DLUHC ministerial colleagues haven’t changed, which means she will probably take on housing.
Maclean tweeted: “Delighted to be appointed as Minister in @luhc Looking forward to a new challenge, tackling one of the defining issues the government faces. I start now!”
Not a landlord
An MP since 2017, she previously worked for HSBC and co-founded an HR-software business for SMEs. According to the Register of Members’ Financial Interests, Mclean isn’t a landlord.
During an interview on Sky News last May, she sparked anger by suggesting some people struggling with rising prices could consider working more hours or getting a better-paid job.
Mclean later said her comments were unfairly taken out of context and that the “long-term” idea would not work for all households.
Her colleagues in the department – for now – along with boss Michael Gove are: Felicity Buchan, who’s responsible for the PRS, Dehenna Davison (levelling up), Baroness Scott of Bybrook (communities), and Lee Rowley (local government).
