T

he LIV Golf rebels on the European Tour are set to be hit with fines of up to £500,000 by the DP World Tour.

And the sanctions are expected to lead to a number of high-profile players rescinding their tour cards to continue to play on the LIV tour.

European stalwarts Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia all walked away from the DP World Tour in the wake of the initial £100,000 sanctions meted out, which were backed by an arbitration panel.

Of the LIV rebels, it is believed that only Garcia has not paid the initial £100,000 with tour officials set to take legal action should the Spaniard, who has given no explanation for the non-payment, not pay the fine.

Westwood said he was hopeful of avoiding further sanctions.

He told the Telegraph: “I do hope that now I’ve resigned they won’t fine me again. I’m not longer a member. I believe I’ve contributed greatly to the tour in my 30 years as a cardholder.”

And he conceded he will no longer play a role at Ryder Cup level but said: “It’s a shame that Europe will lose the experience that Sergio, Ian and I have accumulated over the years.”
