Italian sportscar brand Lamborghini says it is pushing back plans for its first BEV model to the far-away year of 2029.
Lamborghini’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann told reporters at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, near the northern Italian city of Bologna, that the world isn’t quite ready for an all-electric luxury sports car. “We do not think 2029 is late to have an electric car,” he said, according to The Business Times. “We do not think that, in our segment, the market will be ready in 2025 or 2026.”
Volkswagen-owned Lamborghini currently has a hybrid three-model lineup, with the new Urus SE SUV, the Revuelto sportscar, and the new Temerario sportscar, which is priced at a sweet 300,000 euros (US $315,000), excluding value-added tax.
The CEO also added that the ICE phaseout plan in Europe may be delayed and that the company plans to wait and see how regulatory proceedings change in the coming years. He added that the company is open to exploring synthetic fuels in lieu of electrification plans.
“We think this is the right way to face the future,” he said. “There are discussions around synthetic fuels and this is an opportunity for our kind of cars.”
Porsche, too, is reviewing its electrification strategy and says it will extend and launch new ICE models in the next few years, reversing its decision to keep only the 911 as the surviving combustion engine after 2030.
