Only a fifth (22%) say their organisation has a clear policy on where they can and can’t work from according to an Opinium survey of 2,000 business travellers in Australia, Canada, United States and United Kingdom, commissioned by World Travel Protection, a leading global travel risk management organisation.

One in three (33%) want the flexibility of “working from anywhere”, with more than a quarter (27%) saying that they could do their job from anywhere. One in seven describe themselves as an “anywhere worker” or digital nomad (15%).

Almost one in four (24%) say their organisation allows them to work from anywhere, “as long as they get the job done”, and one in six (18%) say their organisation actively encourages its employees to “work from anywhere”. 14% say they would quit their job if they can’t work from anywhere.

In fact, one in ten (10%) plan to take a “hush trip” where they work remotely in a different location and do not tell their employer.

Kate Fitzpatrick, Regional Security Director, EMEA, at World Travel Protection, said, “Being able to work from anywhere is a freedom which many people want, however “hush trips”, where people work remotely but don’t tell their employer, are not a good idea.

“Travelling with business means you are covered on your employer’s insurance and emergency assistance. If something goes wrong and your employer has not given permission for you to work remotely their insurance may not cover you.”
