The Met Office has issued flood alerts across the UK as torrential rain is set to hit and the Environment Agency has issued five red alerts at areas with rivers  could burst their banks.

Met Office warned that there could be local flooding caused by surface water in Southern England and in the north.

Unsettled weather conditions could possibly last until mid-August with longer spells of rain and thunderstorms in the north and western parts of the UK.

The Met Office said that from Friday, “The start of this period is likely to see an unsettled regime, with showers which could be heavy with the risk of thunder, and potentially some longer spells of rain.

“The wettest conditions are likely in the north and west, although still with some showers towards the southeast. Fresh to strong winds are likely at times, especially near western and southern coasts.

“Temperatures around average to rather cool, especially in more persistent rain or showers. Through the rest of this period, a similar theme is likely to continue with a mixture of showers and longer spells of rain, especially towards the northwest, along with some drier interludes, these perhaps becoming slightly more likely towards the southeast.

The five red alerts were issued on rivers in Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tarleton and amber alerts are in Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, the Black Country, Cumbria, South Staffordshire, East Anglia and West Yorkshire.
