Like other nifty life hacks, this was first shared on Tiktok by Zain – much to the shock of his mum and stranded shoppers everywhere.
Though he might still be in school, the young content creator is wise beyond his years and managed to save his mum’s trip to the supermarket using a basic beauty item: a cotton bud.
Whilst you might think this is just another tall tale kids tell each other in the playground, the little boy showed just how quickly he was able to unlock the trolley – after his mum forgot her pound coin.
Taking a clean cotton bud, the little boy was able to bend it and showing how he slotted it neatly into the lock mechanism.
“All you do is push the Q tip right in quite far back,” he told his fans, as he pushed the coin holder in and the trolley unlocked with quiet click.
As if didn’t already deserve to be top of the class, Zain then showed how he was able to lock the trolley and remove the cotton bud – ready to be used another time.
Having doubted whether this hack was even going to work, his mum later joked: “I’m telling you. I didn’t think it was going to work.”
It wasn’t just his family who were impressed though, with this little lad’s hack going viral and receiving over 16,000 views on Tiktok.
In the comments, other adults even dubbed the kid a ‘boy genius’ after sharing the shopping trolley hack.
“Boy genius… I will keep a stash in the car. Lol,” wrote one impressed viewer, with another adding: “Thanks, I’m going to try next time…”
A third joked: “Now I’ll never be bothered by people wanting the £1 after I finish my shop. Usually don’t mind, but with this cost of Livvy.”
However, others weren’t so convinced by this shopping saving hack and questioned whether you’d even have a cotton bud handy.
Whilst many of us might have the odd one rolling around our handbags, another user also argued that the beauty staple was just another thing to forget.
They teased: “Now I’m going to forget the cotton bud and coin.”
Meanwhile, another suggested that there was a simpler hack for those who’d forgotten their change before dashing off to the shops.
“You can use the round end of a Yale key,” they argued, adding: “You always have one with you, thank me later.”
However, this isn’t the only trolley hack that has been doing the rounds recently.
