HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reminding individuals, including agents, who became self-employed, earned income from property, or started a side hustle during the 2024–2025 tax year to register for Self Assessment if they need to complete a tax return for the first time.
The registration deadline is 5 October 2025. New Self Assessment customers can register via GOV.UK, where they will receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)—a necessary step before submitting a return.
If unsure whether a tax return is required, individuals can use HMRC’s free online tool on GOV.UK to check.
The deadline for filing returns and paying any tax owed for the 2024–2025 tax year is 31 January 2026. However, HMRC encourages early filing to help with budgeting, spread payments, or receive any refunds sooner.
Those who no longer need to file a return—or have ceased self-employment—should inform HMRC as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary correspondence or penalties.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s chief customer officer, said: “Thousands of people join Self Assessment each year and anyone new to Self Assessment for the 2024-25 tax year should register as soon as possible. Just search ‘register for Self Assessment’ on GOV.UK to access a wide range of resources to help with registering and sign up today.”
