The largest solar farm in Ohio, Fox Squirrel Solar, is now fully online and delivering clean electricity to the PJM grid.

Developed by EDF Renewables and owned in partnership with Canadian energy company Enbridge, the 577-megawatt (MW) Fox Squirrel Solar is in Madison County, west of Columbus. It’s made up of three phases: the 150 MW Fox Squirrel 1, which came online in December 2023; the 250 MW Fox Squirrel 2, which came online in July 2024; and the 177 MW Fox Squirrel 3, which came online in December 2024.

Fox Squirrel Solar is the largest onshore clean energy project developed and built by EDF Renewables North America. It’s made up of 1.4 million solar panels and 159 inverters in total, and during peak construction, about 650 workers were onsite installing approximately 10,000 panels per day, adding up to nearly 1.5 million work hours.

It’s able to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 118,000 households, but the full generation capacity will be delivered to Amazon through power purchase agreements.

Kate O’Hair, senior vice president for onshore development at EDF Renewables North America, said, “Fox Squirrel has brought hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars to Madison County throughout the development and construction phase. As we transition into the operational phase, we are committed to continuing to be a responsible and reliable neighbor and strengthening our environmental and community stewardship.”

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) anticipates growth in the Buckeye State – it’s currently No. 13 among states for solar capacity, and it’s expected to add 9,574 MW over the next five years and jump to No. 8 in the US for capacity.

However, Fox Squirrel Solar will lose its superlative status as the state’s largest solar farm when the 800 MW, $1 billion Oak Run Solar Project comes online later this year.
