BrewDog to close a number of bars amid ‘economic pressures’ and ‘rising costs’ – London Business News | London Wallet

WETHERSPOONS customers have been left reminiscing over their last pint as the chain prepares to close another pub today.

The Foxley Hatch in Purley will bring its shutters down on Sunday, December 3 and take its last orders at midnight.

The pub, which is located in the London Borough of Croydon, was put up for sale just over a year ago.

In a statement on the closure, a Wetherspoon spokesperson said: “We would like to thank all of the staff and customers at the Foxley Hatch who have made it such a wonderful pub.

“We appreciate our staff’s dedication and hard work and our customers’ loyalty.”

The pub chain is yet to confirm exactly how many staff will be impacted by the closure.

However, none will be made redundant and have all been offered roles at other Wetherspoons sites nearby.

Following the closure announcement, it remains unclear as to whether the pub will reopen under a different brand or business.

But Inside Croydon have since confirmed that a buyer has been found.

It was also added that the site will be taken over “in due course” by a “micro pub”, although this is yet to be confirmed officially.

The nearest Wetherspoons for customers in Purley is now The Whispering Moon in Sutton, around a ten minute drive away.

At the time of the sale announcement, the popular pub chain said it was set to sell off around 30 of its sites.

The move was reiterated as a “commercial decision” and that it was a “misinterpretation” to suggest it was down to difficult trading conditions.

Wetherspoons claims that “almost all” of the pubs closing their doors were in areas where there was another Wetherspoon site nearby.

As part of a trading update in July, the pub chain said it had already sold 28 sites this year and a further 22 were still on the market.

15 of the sold pubs had its tenancy ended early.

Last month, it was announced that another beloved pub is set to close permanently just before Christmas.

The plans to shut the pub doors have been slammed as “scandalous” but the closure is still going ahead on December 10.

And a popular branch was abruptly closed in east London as dozens more boozers are still at risk of shutting for good.

The Butler’s Bell in Stafford and The Millers Well in East Ham became some of the latest Spoons to close after calling last orders in late October.
