Vladimir Putin is moving military assets out of Syria following the fall of the Syrian dictator Bashir al-Assad.

Russian military equipment will be moved using two large landing ships and dry cargo vessels to Libya, North Africa.

the Main Intelligence Agency of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has reported, “On January 5, 2025, the Russian large landing ships Ivan Grin and Alexander Otrakovsky, as well as the dry cargo ship Sparta, are planning to arrive in the Syrian port – they are currently on the way to Tartus in the Mediterranean Sea.”

The agency has said that the Russian Fleet, Captain 1st Rank Yuri Albertovich Davityan is on board the Russian Northern Fleet’s large landing ship Alexander Otrakovsky.

Chief of Staff of the 121st Brigade of Landing Ships is waiting for his warships to move military equipment from the Syrian port of Tartus which is a major blow for Putin.

Ukrainian intelligence has revealed that mercenaries of the African Corps controlled by the Russian Defense Ministry are also on Tartus base in Syria.

Putin’s Africa Corps are also known as the Russian Expeditionary Corps (REK) and their role is to support Russian political influents and Moscow aligned governments in Africa. The Africa Corps is Wagner Group’s succesor.

Moscow has held a military presence in Libya since October 2018 at Benghazi and Tobruk, this is with the full support of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Ukrainian intelligence said, “On January 8, 2025, two more Russian ships are planning to call at Tartus – the general cargo ship Sparta II and the tanker Ivan Skobelev, which are currently planning to cross the Strait of Gibraltar.

“The Russians plan to use the cargo ships Sparta and Sparta II to transport military equipment and weapons from Syria to Libya.”
