The Renters Rights Bill will not pass into law before the summer, with confirmation that it has been delayed until early autumn.
Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell has not allocated any parliamentary time for the Bill to be debated next week, meaning MPs will leave for their summer recess on Wednesday without addressing it.
Instead, it has been reported that the Bill will return to the Commons on 8 September, shortly after Parliament reconvenes. That session is expected to focus on consideration of amendments made in the House of Lords.
While the Lords will still hold the scheduled Third Reading of the Bill on Monday, it it now expected to be little more than a formal step.
The more substantive debate over the numerous amendments proposed by peers will be postponed until the Bill returns to the Commons in September.
Assuming progress continues smoothly, Royal Assent is now likely to be granted before 16 September, when MPs head off again for the autumn party conference season.
