A senior official in Kyiv has accused Romania of denying that a Russian drone “detonated” on their territory to avoid NATO triggering Article 5 which would start World War Three.

Ukrainian politician Oksana Savchuk told Ukrainian television she believes that the Romanian government are trying to prevent NATO getting into a direct war with Russia.

Ukrainian officials said on Monday that Russian drones flew past a Ukrainian city and had hit Romania.

Romanian resident Daniela Tanase, whose house overlooks Ukraine’s Izmail port across the Danube river, said she could not be certain if a drone did land in their territory.

Sky News reported that Tanase said, “We heard the drones, the booms and the air defence systems across the river.

“We saw a light in the distance from our window, it was raining last night.”

Article 5 of the NATO founding treaty, explicitly states that “if a NATO Ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked.”

It further adds, that “an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.”

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Monday morning that Russian drones hit Romania following a huge attack on the port in Izmail.

Ukrainian official Oleg Nikolenko said, “According to Ukraine’s state border guard service, last night, during a massive Russian attack near the port of Izmail, Russian ‘Shakheds’ fell and detonated on the territory of Romania.

“This is yet another confirmation that Russia‘s missile terror poses a huge threat not only to Ukraine‘s security, but also to the security of neighbouring countries, including NATO member states.”

However, Romania has strenuously denied this happened and the Defence Ministry “categorically” denies that Russian drones landed on their territory on Monday morning.

The Ministry said the Russian attack did not “generate direct military threats to Romania’s national territory or territorial waters.

The Romanian Ministry added that they have taken measures to strengthen their defences on the eastern flank.
