The Prime Minister has revealed that Russia fired “multiple missiles” at a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea on 24 August, that declassified intelligence says.

Rishi Sunak updated MPs after his G20 summit in Delhi last week and said that he had three aims, to “increase diplomatic pressure on Russia” and “call out their shameful disruption of global food supplies in the Black Sea.”

The Prime Minister said the second was to “show the world that democracies like the UK, not authoritarian regimes, are leading the fight on global challenges like development and climate change.”

And his third aim was to “strengthen ties and forge new partnerships to ensure the security of the British people.”

Criticising Vladimir Putin Sunak said that for many years the Russian leader has “”lacked the courage to face this G20 peers.

Sunak added, “Day after day, his actions cause horrendous suffering in Ukraine violating the UN charter, threatening European security and disrupting global energy supplies.”

In August  barrage of Russian missiles and Iranian made Shahed drones destroyed more than 270,000 tonnes of grain which was destined to feed the world.

He has called “out the human suffering caused by Putin’s war” in Ukraine, he told G20 leaders.

Last Wednesday the Ukrainian port city of Izmail was under Russian drone strikes overnight and a barrage of missiles landed within “800 metres” from Romania’s border.

Last week Ukraine said that they have photographic evidence a “Shahed” drone was fired by Russia and landed inside Romania’s territory.

The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said last Wednesday that another round of Russian strikes came “very, very close.”

Iohannis said, “We had attacks just today, the minister of defence told me, which were verified at 800 metres from our border. So very, very close.

On Sunday the Russian charge d’affaires summoned by Romania’s Foreign Ministry after debris from a Russian drone was found inside their country.

Iohannis has said that they are “on alert” and they are speaking with NATO and their allies.

On Sunday President Iohannis said a Russian Shahed drone entering Romanian airspace is unacceptable.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement sent to Agerpres on Sunday, “…The charge d’affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest was urgently summoned on Saturday to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the level of state secretary.

“State Secretary for Strategic Affairs Iulian Fota conveyed the protest of the Romanian side over the violation of Romania’s air space following the identification on (our) territory, near the border with Ukraine, of some drone fragments similar to those used by Russian forces in the aggression against Ukraine.”
