Russia launched a “full on aerial attack on Kyiv” overnight and fired nine cruise missiles from ships in the Black Sea, six hypersonic “Kinzhal” aero ballistic missiles from Mig-31K warplanes at the Ukrainian capital overnight.

The “massive” attack on the Ukrainian capital was “exceptional in its density” according to officials and residents in Kyiv were ordered to underground bomb shelters.

The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko urged all residents to “stay in shelters” amid the “intense” full on attack of the capital.

According to local officials the defence systems shot down 18 missiles and it was the debris falling which caused widespread devastation.

The Ukrainian commander-in-chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi said the missile attacks launched from air, sea and land overnight came from the “north, south and east.”

Anti-air systems supplied by the Allies saved many lives tonight. 18 out of 18 missiles were shot down in #Kyiv. Among them 6 hypersonic Kinzhals.

He said, “With six MiG-31K aircraft, six X-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, nine Kalibr cruise missiles from ships in the Black Sea and three land-based missiles (S-400, Iskander-M) were fired.

This is the eighth night attack on Kyiv in May.

“All 18 missiles were destroyed by the forces and means of air defense of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“In addition, on the night of May 16, the enemy attacked with strike drones of the Shahed-136/131 type, and also carried out aerial reconnaissance with three drones of the operational-tactical level – Orlan-10, SuperCum.”

At night, very intensive work of air defense systems was noted in Kyiv.

Russian troops attacked the Kyiv region with cruise missiles and Geran kamikaze drones.

Dame Melinda Simmons, the UK ambassador to Ukraine said, “A full on aerial attack on Kyiv last night, pretty intense. Bangs and shaking walls are not an easy night. Hope everyone is ok.”

The Russian Ministry of Defence said that “targets [were] achieved” as they carried out “high precision attacks on ammunition and storage units.

They then claimed that a hypersonic “Kinzhal” aero-ballistic missiles destroyed a US Patriot air defence system in Kyiv in the early hours.
