Segway just launched a 50 mph electric scooter – and it’s an absolute beast

Segway just dropped what might be its most outrageous electric scooter yet: the GT3 Pro SuperScooter. And with a top speed of 50 mph (80 km/h), it’s safe to say we’re not in commuter scooter territory anymore.

The GT3 Pro is Segway’s latest and fastest model, announced today but officially hitting the brand’s online store on August 12 for $2,699. First teased at CES earlier this year, this high-performance electric scooter is built to blur the lines between fun and full-on insanity. Powered by dual 3,500-watt motors and a 72V battery system, the GT3 Pro delivers a peak 7,000W of power, sending it from 0 to 30 mph (48 km/h) in just 3.9 seconds using its Ultra Boost mode.

It’s not just fast, it’s also surprisingly capable. Riders can expect up to 86 miles (138 km) of range under ideal conditions (read: if you’re going 15 mph or 25 km/h in Eco mode). At a more realistic 50 mph (80 km/h) pace, range drops to 34 miles (55 km), which is still impressive for a stand-up scooter.

To tame that speed, Segway packed the GT3 Pro with serious control systems. Dual-piston hydraulic disc brakes with slotted rotors, S-ABS (anti-lock braking with 25 pulses per second), and Dynamic Traction Control all work together to keep the rubber side down. Suspension comes from a front linkage and rear swingarm setup with adjustable damping up front, soaking up bumps with ease. All that rides on 11-inch ultra-wide, self-sealing tires.

Segway is calling this the “exotic supercar of electric scooters,” and for once, that might not be marketing fluff. Between the high-speed performance, sleek styling, and an overload of tech, it really is in an elite class. You get a 2.4-inch color TFT display, Apple Find My compatibility, Bluetooth, navigation, ride stats, even incoming call notifications. And the new SegRide Stability Enhancement system promises improved geometry and ride feel to keep the handling sharp even at high speeds.

On top of all of those features, the scooter also includes proximity unlocking, automatic headlights with high/low beams, front and rear turn signals, and IPX6 water resistance. Of course, you don’t get that kind of performance and feature list without some bulk. Or in this case, a lot of bulk. The GT3 Pro tips the scales with a 117 lb (53 kg) curb weight. But hey, at least it can support riders up to 330 lb (150 kg)!

Electrek’s Take:

Many electric scooters are built for last-mile travel. The GT3 Pro? It’s built for the last mile of the racetrack. Segway is clearly trying to claim the high-performance crown here, and this scooter definitely puts it within spitting distance of the title. It may not rival the 100 MPH Bo Turbo, but it also costs nearly $30,000 less.

This is the kind of scooter that bridges the gap between micromobility and motorcycles. And I’m not sure if that’s actually a good thing. I’d say this is absolutely not for your average commuter (unless your commute is part drag race), but for riders who want the speed, handling, and tech of a performance machine in a scooter-sized package, the GT3 Pro is as wild as it is tech savvy.

If it were me, I’d probably just get a motorcycle. Why stand when you can sit? But there’s a whole community of scooter devotees out there, and so I don’t think this launch will fall on deaf ears. Just do yourself a favor and wear a full-face helmet so you don’t scrape those ears clean off.
