Southwark Liberal Democrats have hailed the resignation of Cllr Kieron Williams as Leader of Southwark Council a major victory for opposition pressure and local residents demanding better from a failing Labour-run council.

The resignation follows years of scrutiny led by the Liberal Democrats, including calling the first extraordinary council meeting in 18 years to declare no confidence in Cllr Williams’ leadership after a damning judgement from the Regulator of Social Housing.

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition, said, “I want to thank Kieron for his public service and his leadership particularly during the Covid pandemic – a uniquely challenging period for Southwark and our communities.

But this resignation speaks volumes. Just months ago, Southwark Liberal Democrats called the first extraordinary council meeting in 18 years to declare no confidence in his leadership, following a damning judgement from the Regulator of Social Housing which found “serious failings” in Southwark Council.

Under his watch, Labour hiked council tax for the most vulnerable year after year, failed to build homes local people can afford, admitted they won’t hit net zero targets, and oversaw rising crime and antisocial behaviour.

Let’s be honest: Kieron Williams clearly does not feel he can easily or effectively defend Labour’s record at next year’s local elections – and he’s right. Particularly when compounded with the Labour Government’s cruel welfare cuts and dangerous rhetoric on migration. But no new Labour leader can rewrite Labour’s record either. They have all been part of the decisions and failures that have left residents disillusioned and let down.

Even former Labour leader Peter John has warned that voters are ready to “try someone – anyone – else.” The Southwark Liberal Democrats are ready to be that progressive alternative – with a plan, a vision, and councillors who listen and work hard.”

Cllr Williams’ resignation comes after:

  • Southwark Lib Dems called a no confidence meeting – the first extraordinary meeting in 18 years;
  • A formal judgement from the Regulator of Social Housing found “serious failings” at Southwark Council;
  • A continued failure to build the genuinely affordable homes local residents need; the council started building zero council homes in 2024/2025, down from 28 the previous year
  • Years of council tax rises during a cost-of-living crisis;
  • Labour admitting the borough will miss its own net zero targets;
  • Rising crime and antisocial behaviour across Southwark.

Southwark Liberal Democrats say residents deserve not just a change of leader – but a change of direction. As the only elected opposition and credible alternative in Southwark, they are ready to deliver the leadership and accountability the borough needs.
