Developer Star Land Reality UK has secured planning consent for the residential redevelopment of the historic Barnes Hospital in Richmond Upon Thames, south-west London.
CGI of redeveloped Barnes Hospital scheme
The scheme will include 107 apartments across three four-storey blocks. Some 24 flats will be allocated for affordable housing, of which 79% will be available for social rent, with the remaining 21% for shared ownership.
Three flats will be in two retained buildings, with 42% of the social rented homes designed as family units.
Most of the former NHS hospital has been closed since 2007 and is largely derelict.
The plans also include the planting of 64 trees and the creation of five landscaped green spaces, including play areas and accessible public space. Star Land will target an 80% biodiversity net gain for the scheme and a 35% reduction in on-site carbon emissions by using air source heat pumps.
Development manager LS Estates and planning agent Avison Young secured the planning consent on behalf of Star Land Reality.
Mark Swetman, chief executive at LS Estates, said: “We are proud to have received planning permission for the Barnes Hospital site. This development is a milestone in sustainable living, providing much-needed new homes while enhancing the local environment with innovative, ecological features.
“The net zero design and our focus on carbon reduction honours the heritage of the area, delivering modern, high-quality homes that embody our commitment to a sustainable future”
