Stellantis N.V.
STLA,
-0.95%,
the former Fiat Chrysler, said Tuesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Orano to create a joint venture for recycling end-of-life EV batteries and scrap from gigafactories in Enlarged Europe and North America. The move is expected to bolster its position in the EV battery value chain by securing additional access to cobalt, nickel, and lithium, all of which are key for electrification and energy transition. Orano is a French company with 17,000 employees and engages in uranium mining, conversion-enrichment, spent fuel recycling, nuclear logistics, dismantling, and nuclear cycle engineering activities. The JV will produce materials also known as “black mass” or “active mass,” which can be refined at Orano’s planned hydrometallurgical plant in Dunkirk, “so that the materials could be re-used in batteries, thus closing the loop of a circular economy,” said Stellantis.
