SHOCKING footage has emerged of a supercar plunging into a canal after its driver lost control on a residential street.

The clip, which was snapped on a resident’s CCTV camera, shows the hair-raising moment a Dodge Challenger zooms along a metal road.

The driver appears to be racing a Mercedes before he fails to take a sharp bed and loses control of his car.

The supercar can be seen bouncing as it speeds over the grass lawn before it takes out a palm tree and dives into the water.

The vehicle narrowly misses a person – said to be a child – who was walking down to the canal at the time the supercar zooms past.

The car becomes completely submerged before it pops back up.

It’s then that the driver can be seen putting his head out the window, before he is freed from the car.

It was said to have been a brave passerby who leaped in to cut the driver free, before his supercar sank to the bottom of the canal.

The horror unfolded in Florida on a quiet Sunday morning.

Bystanders can be seen rushing to the water’s edge to see if the driver is OK.

One person dives in as the car continues to fill with water, before helping the driver get to the water’s edge.

MailOnline reported Cape Coral Police said witnesses saw the Dodge Challenger racing a Mercedes at speeds of nearly 80 miles per hour.

The force said nobody was injured in the smash.

Lorraine Holder, whose camera snapped the crash, said she quickly realised how serious it was.

She said: “It’s all fun and games until something like this happens.

“My thoughts are if you think that this is OK to do in a residential neighborhood where children could be playing, something is wrong with you.

“You put a lot of others at risk, children, first responders and the one who was brave enough to jump in to cut you free just before your car sank.”

Earlier this month someone snapped footage of a £190k McLaren’s luxury hybrid electric sports car going up in flames.

The luxury motor was engulfed in a fireball while cruising down a main road in Leeds, Yorkshire.

The Artura, the first electrified car from the iconic British brand, was recalled in the US last year due to a fire risk but is still on sale in the UK.
