Tech company reveals new sports broadcast streaming system

A

British company involved with the live broadcast of major sporting events over more than 20 years, including the Premier League, the Rugby World Cup and the Olympics, today revealed new technology that will enable broadcasters to stream their live coverage to billions of people.

Techex, based in Bracknell, Berkshire – which started in 1971 as a media technology business now counts Sky, Disney, NBC Universal, BBC, BT Sport and IMG as customers.

It is gearing up for global expansion with the US, Latin America and Asia, a huge target for the firm who have plans to employ scores more people around the world on the back of an initial £20m investment from London-based private equity house Westbridge last year.

Its latest technological breakthrough, tx darwin, was officially launched this weekend at the IBC Conference in Amsterdam.

It allows broadcasters to move away from a traditional hardware environment and towards a more flexible software-driven operation, hosted in the Cloud.

This in turn opens up a new world of in-picture innovation for viewers, as well as increasing the ability of broadcasters to show more coverage of a wider range of sports, with more in-depth angles and data.

Camilla James COO said: “The world of live broadcast is being turned on its head with the opportunities that the Cloud affords the industry. This ‘new broadcast’ future is revolutionary for broadcasters and transformative for viewers.

“This is pioneering British technology; we are lucky enough to have some of the best brains in this space in this country, and we at techex exporting these skills around the world.”

The company is chaired by industry veteran Mark Sutherland.
