Tesla deploys a fleet of ‘Megapack Chargers’ to help with holiday travels

Tesla has deployed a small fleet of ‘Megapack Chargers,’ a Megapack powering several Supercharger stalls on a trailer, to help with holiday travels.

The nomenclature can be hard to follow here because Tesla already has “Megapacks”, “Megachagers”, and “Superchargers”, and now it also talks about “MegapackChargers.”

However, this is not exactly a new product.

It’s a trailer fitted with a Megapack, Tesla’s biggest stationary energy storage system, and a bunch of Superchargers. We previously reported that Tesla brings those to busy Supercharger stations to avoid wait times during high traffic times, like holidays.

We even saw one that caught on fire and burned down last year.

It now looks like Tesla has built a small fleet of those “MegapackChargers”. The automaker announced that they have deployed in 4 locations:

  • Bakersfield, CA
  • Primm, NV
  • El Centro, CA
  • Cambridge, OH

Tesla shared a few pictures of the mobile charging stations:

Max de Zegher, Tesla’s head of charging, commented on the use of these units:

“MegapackChargers have 3 MWh of capacity capable of charging ~75 cars, 8 x 250kW posts, and are Starlink connected. They’re a powerful tool for temporary congestion bottlenecks and disruptions like hurricanes. They’re recharged within hours by taking a nearby Supercharger cabinet offline at night, when usage is low. They’re costly and high bandwidth to deploy, but make all the difference for getting customers home for the holidays.”

Tesla can have capacity issues at Supercharger stations in high-traffic areas during holidays. It’s important to plan your travel accordingly as you may have to wait a bit at some Supercharger stations.

That said, the automaker’s navigation system is getting better at routing you to available stations.
