Tesla Cybertruck Powershare Installation

Tesla has given an update on its Powershare product, which allows Cybertrucks to power homes, as some owners have been experiencing significant delays.

Cybertruck is Tesla’s first official vehicle capable of bidirectional charging, which allows to send electricity from the electric vehicle to other things, like another EV, a house, or virtually anything.

For powering a home, Tesla calls the system “Powershare”, which allows you to plug your Cybertruck at home and charge it, but also power your home with the Cybertruck’s battery in case of a power outage.

Even though Tesla has been delivering the Cybertruck for close to a year now and Powershare came included with virtually all Cybertruck Foundation Series, the rollout has been difficult.

Tesla is doing Powershare installation, but many Cybertruck owners are complaining that the features are not working even though the installations are physically completed.

That’s not always Tesla’s fault as your local electric utility also needs to approve the system before connecting it, but it does appear that Tesla hadn’t completed some of the software and protocols in some cases.

It’s nothing new for Tesla to deliver a product without the software being completed on it. For example, the Cybertruck just started receiving its (Supervised) Full Self-Driving feature over the last few weeks, almost a year after deliveries started.

Now, Tesla has released an update on the timelines to enable Powershare based on the different configurations:

  • Enabling Powershare for your Cybertruck may take up to a week
  • If you have solar in your home backup circuit, Powershare will be enabled by the end of the year
  • If you have been installed with Backup Switch in an approved utility, Powershare will be enabled by the end of the year
  • For Powerwall owners, Powershare will be enabled in 2025

It sounds like Tesla is planning to roll most configurations out by the end of the year, but those who are coupling their Powershare with a Powerwall, Tesla’s residential battery pack, which already does the same job as Powershare, will have to wait until next year.
