Tesla is preparing to launch a new Model 3 variant in China, the Model 3+, which appears to be geared toward offering more range, likely around 800 km (500 miles).

Yesterday, we reported on Tesla’s filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) for a new variant of the Model Y, Tesla Model YL, which features 6 seats.

Now, we learn of a second new variant that Tesla has filed with MIIT, but this time for the Model 3.

Tesla has filed for a new Model 3+. The new variant is a single-motor rear-wheel-drive, but it features a bigger 225 kW motor than the current RWD variant.

Unlike the existing RWD variant, which features LFP battery cells, it features ternary lithium-ion battery cells from South Korea’s LG Energy Solutions.

The dimensions and weight are the same, thanks to the batteries with higher energy density.

While the MIIT filing doesn’t mention range, every spec and the name point to Model 3+ being geared toward achieving a longer range.

Tesla’s three Model 3 variants in China offer ranges of 634 km, 753 km, and 623 km. Those are based on the CLTC driving cycle

The new Model 3+ is likely going to get over 800 km (500 miles) of range.

It’s a much-needed update, as many buyers have turned to other premium sedans in China with a longer range, such as the Xiaomi SU7, which offers up to 830 km (516 miles) of range.

Electrek’s Take

It appears that Tesla is realizing it can’t compete in the lower market segment in China, so it is shifting its focus to the upper market instead.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea. It won’t increase volumes, but it will help improve its gross margins in China, which are currently hovering around zero percent.

Tesla can’t afford to lose the price war and the specs war.

I think it’s inevitable that it will lose the price war in China, but I think many people were surprised that Tesla was also losing the EV specs war.
