With what proved to be his final ball in cricket, Broad had Alex Carey caught behind to secure a 49-run victory for his side in a remarkable encounter at the Oval.
Australia had been well-placed in their pursuit of 384 when the sides returned after a rain delay, Steve Smith and Travis Head both looking comfortable.
But Moeen Ali got the breakthrough and Chris Woakes then had Smith caught at slip as England took four runs for 11 wickets, before Broad gave an incredible series a fitting conclusion. He removed Todd Murphy, before Carey became his 604th and final Test wicket.
With the Ashes finished at 2-2, Ben Stokes’ side were left to reflect on the Manchester rain while Australia’s wait for a first series win in England since 2001 goes on.
