The Defender Sport EV is expected to debut by the end of 2026 as a smaller, more affordable sibling to the iconic off-road SUV.

What to expect from the Defender Sport EV

Jaguar Land Rover gave the Defender a facelift for the 2026 model year, but the rugged off-roader is due for a much bigger upgrade.

The Defender already has a unique style as one of the few genuine luxury off-road brands, distinct from Range Rover, and even other premium automakers like BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.

Although JLR has been talking about a “mini Defender” for years now, it’s finally coming together. A new prototype was spotted by AutoExpress in near-production form.

Like its big brother, the Defender Sport is expected to retain its upright, boxy design but with a few minor tweaks. For one, the front end is updated with a more modern look featuring slim LED lights and an improved front nose design.

The prototype featured off-road tires, blacked-out lower bumpers, and flared wheel arches, adding to the Defender’s already rugged look. Other recent spy photos, like the one posted below from AutoEvolution, show a similar rugged design.

Unlike the standard Defender, the electric Sport will be underpinned by JLR’s EMA platform, meaning it will be available exclusively as an EV.

The new battery pack lies flat on the floor, which should help open up more interior space. Inside, the Defender Sport EV will feature a setup similar to the full-size model, but with larger display screens and a new user interface.

Although it will only offer two-row seating, AutoExpress said there is a possibility of a sixth seat between the driver and front passenger.

JLR’s EMA platform is expected to support battery packs ranging from 70 to 90 kWh, which should provide a range of 300 to 320 miles in the smaller Defender Sport EV.

The electric SUV will still be equipped with the brand’s off-road capabilities, including four-wheel drive and possibly JLR’s Terrain Response system. Thanks to its electric powertrain, the Defender Sport EV will likely be even more capable than an internal combustion engine model, thanks to its precise, instant torque delivery and lower center of gravity.

Speaking with Autocar, Mark Cameron, global managing director of the Defender brand, said the development on the smaller electric SUV is “well advanced,” but wouldn’t confirm it would use the Sport name or when it would launch.

Although it will be the brand’s smallest vehicle and first EV, Cameron said it still has to have the Defender DNA, or in his words, “epic, built-to-last, go anywhere capability.”

What matters, he said, “is that a Defender has to be class-leading in the attributes that make it a Defender,” hinting at a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain.

The Defender Sport EV is expected to debut by the end of 2026, with sales beginning in early 2027. Defender may have an opportunity with a few electric off-road SUVs currently on the market.

Jeep is launching the Recon EV (pictured above) in the UK later this year (early 2026 in the US), while Mercedes-Benz offers the G580 with EQ Technology.

The electric Sport will sit below the entry-level standard Defender, with prices expected to start at around £40,000 to £50,000 ($54,000 to $67,500). To give you a better idea, the Jeep Recon EV is expected to start at around £75,000 ($101,000) when it launches in the UK later this year.

In the US, the 2026 Jeep Recon EV starts at $65,000, but the electric Defender will also face more competition from the Rivian R1S and the GMC Hummer EV in the electric off-roader segment.
