The University of Kent has been shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Higher Education Institution of the Year’ award at the 2025 National Education Opportunities Network (NEON) Awards.
The NEON Awards celebrate achievements in supporting learners from underrepresented backgrounds to access and thrive in higher education. The University of Kent being shortlisted recognises its strong commitment to widening participation across the entire student journey— from outreach initiatives in local communities to strategic leadership by senior management at The University of Kent.
The university has been commended for embedding inclusive practices throughout its operations, with its diverse student body benefiting from innovative teaching, learning, and robust support services.
Kent’s regionally focused, collaborative outreach—particularly its evidence-based, impact-assessed attainment-raising programmes co-developed with local schools—was highlighted as a model of sector-leading practice.
Judges were also impressed by The University of Kent’s tailored careers support for students from underrepresented backgrounds, alongside clear evidence of its progress in widening access. The university’s dedicated employability schemes, including bursary-supported initiatives and the Empower Scheme, play a key role in removing financial barriers, boosting professional opportunities, and improving student retention and success for current students(to also develop real world skills and employability skills).
Rationale for University of Kent being nominated
The University of Kent is already a proud holder of the Diversity Mark Award for student inclusivity and promoting excellence from students from a wider diverse background of Kent Students. The award is presented to convenors who engage in a process of review and reflection with their students to ensure that their course materials include authors and viewpoints from a range of diverse backgrounds—including race, gender, sexuality, disability, and socio-economic status—within their discipline. The Diversity Mark initiative supports staff in incorporating a broader spectrum of voices and perspectives into their reading lists, fostering a more inclusive learning environment for all students with a inclusive and comprehensive academic support facilities in academic schools across both the Medway Campus and Canterbury Campus. A strong student learning advisory service and student union are particularly noted here, with a proud background of international students in University of Kent campus life.
