New research has revealed the worst European capitals for a good night’s sleep, with Turkey’s capital, Istanbul coming out on top.

The study by BedKingdom.co.uk analysed several factors to determine where the worst night’s sleep can be had, which was the average temperature compared to the ideal sleeping temperature, quietness, and concerns about crime.

It found that Turkey’s capital, Istanbul, is the worst European capital for a good night’s sleep. Just 35.84% of residents believe the city to be quiet, and 42.04% of residents have concerns about their home being broken into, meaning it scores poorly. The area’s year-round temperature also sits at 13.9°C, compared to the ideal sleeping temperature of 18.3°C.

The city-state of Monaco takes second place on the list. It sits closer to the ideal sleeping temperature with a year-round temperature of 16.4°C. However, only 19.64% of residents consider the city quiet, and 22.08% are concerned about their homes being broken into.

Paris takes third place on the list, due to the fact that only 41.48% of residents consider the city quiet, and a whopping 51.96% of them are worried about their homes being broken into. The city’s average year round temperature also sits at 12.3°C.

Taking fourth place on the list is the Belgian capital of Brussels. 45.35% of residents in the city consider it quiet, with 49.89% worried about their homes being broken into. Compared to other cities on the top ten, it has an average temperature of 10.5°C, nearly half the ideal sleeping temperature.

Rounding out the top five is England’s capital, London. 45.08% of residents consider the city quiet, the area has a year-round average temperature of 11.3°C, and 47.48% of people are worried about their homes being broken into.

a spokesperson for BedKingdom.co.uk said: “It often happens that how easy it is to get a good night’s sleep in an area can be a deciding factor on where to live, among other things.

“People worrying about their home being broken into is likely a result of a high crime rate, so if you’re living with stress about this, and where you live is particularly loud, it may be time to think about moving.”
