NATO has said that they stand in “strong solidarity” with Romania and there is “no indication” at this stage the Russian drone attack on Monday was intentional.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday said that there are risks with Russia’s air strikes happening so close to the alliance members.

Stoltenberg said, “We don’t have any information indicating an intentional attack by Russia, and we are awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”

He added, “It demonstrates the risks of incidents and accidents.

Bucharest said on Wednesday that “pieces which might be the elements of a drone were found” on Romanian territory.

The Ukrainian port city of Izmail was under further Russian drone strikes on Wednesday and a barrage of missiles landed within “800 metres” from Romania’s border.

Article 5 of the NATO founding treaty, explicitly states that “if a NATO Ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked.”

It further adds, that “an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.”
