It looks just like the LEAF, but it’s not wearing a Nissan badge. With its big debut just around the corner, Mitsubishi’s new EV was spotted testing for the first time.

Mitsubishi readies new Nissan LEAF-based EV

Nissan upgraded the LEAF for its third generation in every way possible. The all-new LEAF drops its iconic hatchback style for a taller, more crossover-SUV-like design, longer driving range, and a built-in NACS port for charging at Tesla Superchargers.

Starting at under $30,000, the 2026 Nissan LEAF remains one of the most affordable EVs in the US, alongside its old rival, the Chevy Bolt EV, which was also heavily updated for the 2027 model year.

The LEAF is set to spawn a sister model from Mitsubishi as the Japanese automaker teams up to spark a comeback in North America.

Mitsubishi confirmed last year that it’s working with Nissan to bring a new EV, based on the LEAF, to the US and Canada, starting in summer 2026.

The yet-to-be-named EV was caught testing for the first time, with its official debut coming up. Although it’s covered, the new images from CarBuzz (via NEWCARinjapan) clearly show that the new EV will be the Nissan LEAF with Mitsubishi badging.

Similar to Subaru and Toyota, Mitsubishi will give the vehicle its own unique styling, with distinctive lights, bumpers, fenders, and other minor design changes.

Apart from saying it will be based on the Nissan LEAF and it’s set to launch in summer 2026, Mitsubishi has yet to reveal any additional details about the upcoming EV.

It will likely be available with a similar battery and powertrain as the new LEAF. The 2026 Nissan LEAF is powered by a 75 kWh battery and a 174 hp front-mounted electric motor, delivering an EPA-estimated range of up to 303 miles.

Nissan was expected to launch a more affordable entry-level variant with a smaller 52 kWh battery. However, it recently scrapped it for the 2026 model due to “customer demand and segment needs.”

With Mitsubishi preparing to launch the new EV this summer, we should learn more soon. Check back soon for the latest updates.
