TotalEnergies has officially opened its largest solar power installation in Europe, and it’s a big one. The massive solar cluster is located just outside Seville in southern Spain and is made up of five solar farms. Together, they have a total capacity of 263 megawatts (MW) – enough to generate 515 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity each year.

That’s about as much power as 150,000 homes in Spain use annually. Even better? It’ll prevent 245,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Most of the electricity will be sold through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), with the rest going to the wholesale electricity market.

This project is a big deal for Andalucía, too. The regional government declared it of “strategic interest,” and it’s already brought major benefits to the local economy. Construction created around 800 direct and indirect jobs. The solar array includes 400,000 bifacial solar panels mounted on trackers.

“We’re really grateful to the Spanish government and the region of Andalucía for their support,” said Olivier Jouny, senior vice president of renewables at TotalEnergies. “This project supports Spain’s goal of hitting 80% renewables by 2030.”

TotalEnergies is the fourth-largest provider of electricity in Spain, with over 2 million residential and business customers.
