More than half of train services will be cancelled today as 20,000 rail workers in England have begun a 24-hour strike amid a long-running dispute over jobs, pay and conditions.

The strike action comes in the same week as half-term holidays for most schools in England and Wales, and is expected to cause widespread disruption.

The walk-out by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) is the second of three by rail unions to hit the network this week.

It will affect most operators in England and some cross-border services into Scotland and Wales.

A spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group, the body representing the rail operators, said: “The upcoming rail strikes called by the Aslef and RMT leadership will not only affect our passengers’ daily commute, but will also impact those travelling to and from the FA Cup final and other events across the country, causing disappointment and frustration for tens of thousands of people.”
