The UK-EU deal has given British steel a major boost as “restrictive” regulations will be slashed under the “bespoke” agreement that will now see steel to be protected from European Union tariffs, this will save the sector £25 million a year.

Officials have also confirmed that the “reset” deal will see the UK not returning to the single market or the customs union.

The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Monday, “We are agreeing a new strategic partnership fit for our times, providing real, tangible benefits on security, irregular migration, energy prices, agri-food, trade and more, bringing down bills, creating jobs and protecting our borders,” he said.

“We have delivered this progress through hard work together at every level, and teams have identified the areas where we can make a real difference while protecting our sovereignty and independence.

“I want to thank the negotiating teams on both sides, and I want to thank all of you for your engagement on this.”

Minister for European Union Relations and lead Government negotiator, Nick Thomas-Symonds said, “Today is a historic day, marking the opening of a new chapter in our relationship with the EU that delivers for working people across the UK.

“Since the start of these negotiations, we have worked for a deal to make the British people safer, more secure and more prosperous. Our new UK-EU Strategic Partnership achieves all three objectives. It delivers on jobs, bills and borders.

“Today is a day of delivery. Britain is back on the world stage with a government in the service of working people.”

However, the Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has warned this could see “free movement returning” which is “very concerning.

Badenoch said, “We’re becoming a rule-taker from Brussels once again.

“And with no details on any cap or time limits on youth mobility, fears of free movement returning will only increase. This is very concerning.”
