Ukrainian forces have reported they destroyed an advanced Russian air defence system in the Kursk region in the early hours of Sunday.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) General Staff said an $200 million S-400 “Triumf” radar station which was being used by the 1490th anti-aircraft missile regiment.
They had been operating the S-400 in ground-to-ground mode to attack land targets, the Kyiv Post reports.
The S-400 costs around $200 million and Russia’s equivalent to the US made Patriot air-defence system which Ukraine is currently using to protect their cities from Russian air attacks.
“Civilian objects and residents of settlements in the frontline regions of Ukraine are the most common targets of the Russian invaders,” the General Staff stated.

“Units of the Missile Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in cooperation with other components of the Defense Forces, launched a group strike.”
On 6 August this year Ukrainian armed forces started their incursion into the Kursk region and controlled almost 1,376 square kilometers.
However, Russia has recaptured around 40% of their territory in the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces as Moscow has conducted waves of counter assaults.
A senior military source who is on Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia deployed around 59,000 troops in the Kursk region as Kyiv’s forces made their incursion in the Oblast on 6 August.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Vladimir Putin wants to recapture the Kursk region by 20 January when Donald Trump is inaugurated as the SU President.
The senior Ukrainian military source said, “At most, we controlled about 1,376 square kilometres, now of course this territory is smaller. The enemy is increasing its counterattacks.
“Now we control approximately 800 square kilometres. We will hold this territory for as long as is militarily appropriate.”
The Kursk region has not been invaded by a foreign military power since World War Two which has angered the Russian dictator.
