Scenes of devastation caused by the war in Ukraine are becoming sadly familiar, so it is heartening to be able to report a positive development in the country’s battle-ravaged areas.

Team4UA, a foundation with a “mission to introduce disruptive technologies into humanitarian emergency response”, is working with Ukraine’s government to rebuild houses, schools and essential buildings using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology.

In Lviv, a five-week build of a new school using an onsite 3D concrete printer is due to finish this month, ready for use by 100 students in January.

The partners hope the technology will help to quickly replace some of the 330 schools destroyed and over 2,000 damaged in the conflict, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science.

Danish 3D construction companies COBOD and 3DCP Group provided the technology and are leading the printer’s operations, while CEMARK provides cement for the 3D concrete mix. Architect and design studio Balbek Bureau designed the project, while architect Ars Longa developed the engineering concept.
