The UK’s largest gas storage site has fired up on to the grid to keep up with demand as the temperatures drop.

British Gas owner Centrica said that the Rough storage site which is 18 miles of the coast of Yorkshire will help the grid with demand.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning on Tuesday to Wednesday for widespread overnight frost and in Scotland and northern England snow is due to fall.

Centrica chief executive Chris O’Shea said on Tuesday, “Gas storage is vital to ensure the UK can manage demand effectively, keeping prices down, and Rough contributes more than 50% of the UK’s total gas storage.”

British Gas has enough reserves to supply demand for 12 days, however the European counterparts have substantially more, the Netherlands has 123 days and France has 103.

O’Shea added, “Customers are struggling with high energy bills, which are driven by international energy price.

“I’m proud of the actions our team has taken over the last 18 months, including our decision to bring Rough back online, to underpin the UK’s energy security.

“However, we still have the lowest levels of energy storage of the world’s major economies, with the ability to store fewer than eight days of peak winter demand, and this leaves us susceptible to shocks in international markets.”
