Videogame software firm Unity Software Inc.

on Monday said it planned to lay off around 1,800 employees, or 25% of its staff, amid efforts to focus on its core business. The company, whose software is used by smaller developers and larger ones to make videogames, said it expected the dismissals to take place largely in the first quarter, but said it couldn’t yet estimate the costs for things like severance and employee benefits. Monday’s announcement follows prior layoffs, struggles to turn a steady profit, and a leadership shakeup in October after the company angered game developers a month earlier when it proposed collecting new fees from games with higher sales. The company changed those plans in response. In November, Unity said it planned to close offices in more than a dozen locations. Shares rose 4.9% after hours on Monday.
