Volvo is introducing a new program offering buyers an entire year of free home EV charging. The initiative is launching in Sweden first before it rolls out globally.

Volvo launches free home EV charging program

Starting in February 2026, those who purchase a new Volvo electric vehicle will receive a free year of home charging.

Volvo is partnering with Swedish energy company Vattenfall to offer one year of free home EV charging. The program provides up to 25,000 km (15,500 miles) of complementary fossil-free charging per year and is good on any new EV lease or purchase.

Drivers will benefit through an electricity contract with Vattenfall, while the smart charging feature can be accessed through the Volvo app.

Although the program is kicking off in Sweden first, Volvo said it will use insights from the initial phase to “lay the foundation for a broader rollout across the globe.” The company plans to create similar partnerships with energy providers to expand the program into “Europe and beyond.”

Volvo said the program is more than free EV charging. It is designed to show how electric vehicles can play an active role in establishing a sustainable energy ecosystem.

When vehicle-to-everything (V2X) becomes available in 2026, Volvo will expand the program to include special offers for bi-directionally enabled EVs, like the EX90. Drivers can sell energy back to the grid or store it for use during an outage.

Volvo currently offers five all-electric vehicles. In January, it will launch the EX60, which is expected to be a cornerstone of Volvo’s lineup as the first vehicle underpinned by its new SPA3 platform.

Will we see a similar program in the US? Volvo mentioned plans to expand it into Europe and other global markets, so it will likely be introduced in North America at some point.

Then again, the US is shifting away from policies promoting EV and clean energy adoption, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it missed out.

As it looks to ramp up sales, Volvo launched the lower-priced EX30 Single Motor in the US earlier this month, starting at under $40,000. It joins the updated EX90 and EX40 in Volvo’s all-electric lineup.
