The popular Volvo FL Electric semi truck is now available in a new, 30,000 lb. (Class 7) entry-level model featuring a new battery, updated tech, and advanced ergonomics to make it an ideal urban transport tool.

By dropping an axle and shortening the overall length compared to its largest cabover-style Electric offerings, Volvo has created more compact and agile platform that’s easier to operate in Europe’s tight city streets. And, thanks to its new battery configurations, Volvo Trucks has made its new electric semi more affordable for fleet buyers, too.

“This is a perfect inner-city workhorse with no tailpipe emissions,” explains Jan Hjelmgren, Volvo Trucks’ Head of Product Management. “We are always there to help our customers find the best electric truck for their business. You should only buy as much battery capacity as you need for the task to maximize the productivity in terms of payload capacity and profitability.”

The new 14 tonne (~30,000 lbs.) CGVWR truck features a 145 kWh battery pack that sends power to a 180 kW (~240 hp) electric motor that uses axle gearing to apply a nearly unbelievable, Earth-moving 11,800 lb-ft of torque at 0 rpm. That combination is good enough to haul what you need to haul up to 200 km (~125 miles) on a full charge.

Once that battery pack is depleted, operators can charge it back up to 80% SOC in less than 90 minutes – or about the time it would take a big box or grocery store to unload the trailer and get the truck back on the road.

Electrek’s Take

The new, entry-level FL Electric offering from Volvo will surely find a lot of takers in the most densely packed cities of Europe, Asia, and Australia where Volvo’s electric semi truck has already found more than 5,000 takers for its battery-powered trucks and logged well over one hundred million (that’s 100,000,000) miles of operation.
