Poland will continue to supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine under the existing framework and the Warsaw will step up arming themselves “with more modern weapons” in the face of Russia’s aggression.

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies and due to a bitter dispute over grain and the two nations are becoming divided.

On Wednesday evening Poland’s Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki said, “We are no longer transferring weapons to Ukraine, because we are now arming Poland with more modern weapons.”

This news Poland will stop sending weapons to Kyiv will be most welcomed by the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin.

The Polish government spokesperson Piotr Müller said, “In the context of the issues of arms supplies, I would like to inform you that Poland carries out only pre-agreed supplies of ammunition and weapons, including under contracts concluded with Ukraine.

“This is, among other things, the largest foreign contract signed by the Polish arms industry after 1898 – for the supply of Crab howitzers.”

He added that an international aid hub for Ukraine is still operating in Poland, he said, “We remind you that in the first months of the war, Poland provided the key tanks, armored vehicles, aircraft and ammunition for the defense of Ukraine, which were necessary to stop Russia’s attack on Ukraine and, in the future, on other EU countries, including Poland.

“In the first months of the war, when other EU countries discussed support, Poland consistently helped to repel Russia’s attack.”

Ruslan Tradis, a resident fellow for security research at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab said, “The Polish government’s far-right policies benefit Russia in the long term.

“Recent unfortunate statements from Warsaw show how easily the Kremlin can gain an advantage as long as it uses fears, as happened with the Ukrainian grain topic that became a centre of local politics.”
