Norway became the first side to formally book their spot in the Euro 2025 knockout rounds on Sunday after a goal from Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen combined with Eva Nystrom’s early own-goal to see the Landslaget to a 2-1 win over Finland.
The Lionesses’ campaign got off to a dour start as they were comprehensively beaten by France. The 2-1 scoreline totally flattered the Britons, who started well but lose their gusto after Alessia Russo saw an early goal chalked off for the most marginal of offside decisions. Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore scored in quick succession in the first half to all but put the game to bed, before Kiera Walsh bagged a late consolation for England.
Elsewhere in Group D, Wales were roundly beaten by the Netherlands as Vivianne Miedema bagged her hundredth international goal. Drawn into the so-called group of death, Cyrmu have it all to do as they face a must-win meeting with France next time out.
Spain, led by two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati are the favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the month, and they sent out a message by thumping Portugal in their tournament opener. Alexia Putellas was among the scorers in a 5-0 win, sending her nation straight to the top of Group B.
Italy had briefly topped the table thanks to a 1-0 win over Belgium with Arianna Caruso netting the only goal of the game.
Switzerland plays host to 15 other nations across four weeks, culminating with the final in Basel on July 27, 2025. However, they are facing an uphill battle to reach the knockout phase after losing to Norway.
