A former Tory MP has shed some light on how the government is run and that Ministers are given positions and have no knowledge at all of the sector they are in charge of.

The former Tory MP and Prisons Minister Rory Stewart OBE who is also a former British Army officer and a diplomat and worked within four different departments within the British government.

Stewart also served as the Deputy Governor in Maysan and Dhi Qar for the Coalition Provisional Authority after the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The former MP said it is “completely mad” how Ministers are given new roles in government and they have no knowledge at all of the sector that they are now in charge of.

The former Tory MP described how he was given his role as the Prisons Minister, he told Sky News, “I hadn’t spoken to a prisoner or a prison officer for 20-years.

I’ve never met someone who worked in probation but thanks to the genius of the British ministerial system, I was now responsible for all the prisons, prisoners, ex-offenders, officers, probation officers and sentencing policy in England and Wales.”

Stewart added, “You could not run a fish and chip shop in the way in which the British government is run, it’s insane.”

He continued, “It’s not that politicians are necessarily incompetent or daft, it’s that these jobs are mad. It cannot make sense to put somebody into a job as important as that for just a few months.

“We need governments that say you must remain in (post) for a minimum of two years in these jobs, unless you actually have a horrible scandal.

“We need to look at the American system where we have genuine professionals as Cabinet Ministers.”

“It’s a miracle that Britain manages to actually keep going at all the way that we run our politics.”

Stewart said ahead of his new memoir Politics On The Edge to GB News that MPs are pretending to be all knowing.

The former diplomat told GB News, there is a “gap between the way that MPs are encouraged to present themselves to the public and who they really are is almost unsustainable.

“It’s mad, because you’re pretending to be all-knowing, perfect, dynamic, confident. You are pretending that you’ve got the answers to everything, and that ‘I know where we’re going’.

“The truth is, this is a country of 70 million people, and politicians don’t really know what’s going on. And yet we pretend to the public that we do.”
