Buick launches Electra L7 extended-range sedan in China, starting at $23,820

Buick has had the best EV name in the business for decades, but an electrified Electra sedan hasn’t been offered in the US — yet. While everyone is fretting about the death of the Federal EV tax credit, Buick has been working on a new extended-range EV for China that offers usable range and entry-luxe features at an affordable price.

Following few weird quirks of history, Buick has become a highly respected aspirational brand in China despite the brand’s image falling behind upstarts like Acura and Lexus in the US — that’s America’s loss, too, because GM has been rocking great-looking Buick sedans out of its Asian dealerships that would look absolutely amazing driving down Park Avenue.

The Chinese Buicks’ excellence goes beyond their appearance, too. The latest is equipped with a new, high-level range-extending hybrid drive system co-developed by GM and its partners in the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai. As such, the new 2026 Buick Electra L7 EREV seen here employs a fresh 40.2 kWh “Ultra Energy” battery pack with a CLTC-rated range of 302 km (~190 miles) of pure electric range and up to 1,400 km (~870 miles) of bladder-busting “combined” driving range.

The new Buick also features an advanced ADAS system that seems good enough to satisfy China’s recent ban on hyperbolic self-driving claims, and (of course) dog mode.

Though we’ve known what to expect from the new Buick Electra L7 for a few months in terms of specs and appearance, there was one vital piece of information revealed at the model’s official launch party this past weekend: the price!

GM is offering a special launch price of its latest Buick EREV sedan a limited-time starting price of RMB 169,900 (about $23,800 US), and promises to begin customer deliveries of the new sedan October 20th.

The company plans to offer five variants of the Electra L7 with official starting prices of RMB 173,900, RMB 186,900, RMB 193,900, RMB 206,900, and RMB 219,900 (about $30,900) for the top-shelf models. You can check out some photos of the new Buick, below, then let us know why you think we can’t have nice things in the comments.
