Nigel Underdown

Martin & Co Welwyn Garden City is under new ownership, with father-and-daughter team Nigel Underdown and Mikala Hatfield taking over the branch from long-standing franchise owner Stephen Dooley, who is retiring after more than a decade with the business.

Underdown and Hatfield bring a combined 45 years of experience in estate agency and property management.

Underdown has worked in the sector for over 30 years and is also a landlord with a personal property portfolio. Hatfield has more than 15 years’ experience in property management, client relations and compliance, and has run several businesses, including a charitable venture founded in memory of her son.

The pair said they intend to build on the foundations laid by Dooley while maintaining the branch’s focus on professional service and local relationships.

“Stephen built a highly reputable business with long-standing client relationships, something we’re proud to inherit,” said Hatfield. “Our goal is to continue that legacy by modernising where needed while maintaining the personal service and professionalism that clients have come to expect.”

Planned initiatives include regular landlord updates, educational events, and guidance on forthcoming legislation, such as the Renters Reform Bill. They also aim to further develop the sales department alongside the existing lettings operation.

“Our vision is to be the most trusted and forward-thinking property agency in the area, one that delivers exceptional service, builds lasting relationships, and remains adaptable to an ever-changing market,” said Underdown. “We want our clients to feel supported, informed, and confident every step of the way.”

Group MD Toby Philips added: “Their [Underdown and Hatfield’s] combined experience, shared values, and genuine passion for people make them the perfect fit to lead this successful branch into its next chapter. Their family partnership embodies the spirit of our network – local expertise, trusted relationships, and a commitment to exceptional service.”

To celebrate the new chapter, Underdown and Hatfield will be hosting a Landlord Event on 4th November at Mill Green Golf Club, covering the upcoming Renters Reform Bill and what it means for local landlords.
